My blood pressure, glucose levels, and weight measured higher every year during my annual physical. Complications from type two diabetes contributed to the death of my mother and grandmother. With my family history, I knew I was already at high risk for diabetes, and my obesity increased that risk.

During this year’s physical, my doctor told me I was at the high end of pre-diabetes and given the trend of my health numbers, I would probably need medications when I returned the next year.

After years of ignoring the signs, I finally went to the Laitram Health & Wellness Center and saw Emily Davis, FNP, for health coaching. I made incremental changes over the course of the year and took the small steps necessary to incorporate healthy habits into my life that are sustainable. I’ve completely changed my eating and exercise habits and I make sure to log them every day. I used to dread exercise – now I’m a fitness fanatic! I complete four personal training sessions every week and take exercise classes including dance aerobics, HIIT classes, yoga, and Pilates.

I am down 80 pounds since last year. I haven’t reached my goal weight yet, but I’m in my late 40s and feel better than I did when I was in my 20s! I’m able to spend more time being active with my kids, I sleep better, and because of Emily’s consistent encouragement that helped me change my lifestyle, I live a happier life.
