At 47 years old, I was 5’11” and weighed 380 pounds. I had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, hyperglycemia, severe sleep apnea, and was at major risk for heart disease. Plus, my family has a history of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. The thought of suffering the same fate as my family members scared the heck out of me.
I knew if I could take responsibility and address my poor eating habits, stress, and lack of exercise, my health would improve. I have three beautiful children, three grandchildren, and my wife to take care of. I don’t want them to need to figure out life without me.
Will Goodwin, FNP, and Kami Deets, MA, at the Family Wellness Center at the Vermont Country Store are wonderfully supportive and willing to hold me account-able. Will helped me develop a customized wellness plan and continues to help me stay on track even when I am discouraged. He leads group discussions and always takes the time to speak with me no matter what the issue.
I have adopted a low-carb diet and have cut out sugar, processed foods, and wheat products. I recently participated in a Summer Walking Challenge and am currently averaging 80,000-90,000 steps per week. Since April 2018, I have lost 93 pounds. My blood pressure has decreased significantly, my cholesterol has improved, and my blood sugar has normalized. I have another 90 pounds to go but feel that by staying positive and continuing my work with Will, I will achieve my goal!
