I am a 41-year-old mother of two children, and my life changed for the better when I had a routine exam with Wendy Wall, FNP, at the Aflac Care Center. I was always tired, had painful joints, and weighed 276 pounds. However, the blood results scared me the most. My A1c was 5.9, indicating prediabetes. Diabetes runs in my family and I was not going to let it run me, so I signed up for health coaching.

I started by balancing carbs and drinking more water. My food habits changed tremendously – I am now more aware of what ingredients are in my food, making it easier to cook healthy meals with my family. I’ve started using the stairs at work and have incorporated Zumba into my routine. Neither feel like exercise to me!

Within the first three months, my A1c level decreased to 5.5 and is now within the normal range. I was amazed. As of today, I’ve lost 70 pounds, my BMI is 38.8, and I’m off my diuretic medication. Changing my lifestyle hasn’t been easy, but it is worth it. I want to be the best mother I can be not by just being there, but also by leading by example.

If you want to be healthier, just start! It’s never too late. It took one health coaching visit to change my outlook for the better. It’s a judgment-free zone and the staff is there for you. The best thing you can do is surround yourself with people who support you and are interested in your lifestyle changes.
